6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase is the seconddehydrogenase in the pentose phosphate shunt. Deficiency of thisenzyme is generally asymptomatic, and the inheritance of thisdisorder is autosomal dominant. Hemolysis results from combineddeficiency of 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase and6-phosphogluconolactonase suggesting a synergism of the twoenzymopathies.
