The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the innexinfamily. Innexin family members are the structural components of gapjunctions. This protein and pannexin 1 are abundantly expressed incentral nervous system (CNS) and are coexpressed in variousneuronal populations. Studies in Xenopus oocytes suggest that thisprotein alone and in combination with pannexin 1 may form celltype-specific gap junctions with distinct properties. Multipletranscript variants encoding different isoforms have been found forthis gene.
