The product of this gene is a membrane protein expressedon the oligodendrocyte cell surface and the outermost surface ofmyelin sheaths. Due to this localization, it is a primary targetantigen involved in immune-mediated demyelination. This protein maybe involved in completion and maintenance of the myelin sheath andin cell-cell communication. Alternatively spliced transcriptvariants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
