The 60-kDa Heat Shock Protein (Hsp60) is a highly conserved member of the molecular chaperone network commonly imported into the mitochondria to assist in the folding and assembly of mitochondrial proteins (1). Under environmental stress conditions, synthesis of Hsp60 is up-regulated then involved in gene expression regulation, DNA replication, signal transduction, differentiation, apoptosis, cellular senescence or immortalization (2). Hsp60 is also believed to protect mitochondrial ATPase activity under conditions of increasing temperature (3). Hsp60, along with Hsp70, has also been shown to play a role in a danger signalling cascade in response to bacterial infection (4).
